When they see the phone, they scatter.

Tonight, I am making a mid-western hot dish for supper. We will eat it and watch the Democratic National Convention. My version will have ground turkey, mushrooms, peas, a few other vegetables and the inevitable tater tots. I even broke with our house rules and bought a can of soup, Campbells, cream of mushroom, in order to be authentic.

For the last six months or so much of my cooking has been Japanese or Korean so this represents a significant departure from our normal diet. My cardiologist warns against processed food of any kind so this is a big “cheat” night for me. I don’t expect to want to repeat it but it will be interesting, I’m sure. In preparation for this supper, we had a salad for breakfast. I’m not deluding myself that this dish will have any nutritional value.

On the window just to the left of my desk, I have a bird feeder. It is one of those feeders that attach to the glass with suction cups. Squirrels can’t reach it, chipmunks, mice, rats — whatever, none of them can get to it. Only the birds can reach it. Not surprisingly, they love it. It’s emptied every day.

The cardinals have taken to sitting on the windowsill observing me as I write. It’s hard to ignore them, I wonder what they’re thinking. Sometimes they sit on the feeder and gaze out at the view. They can sit there for 20 minutes at a time, just looking at the sky and the…
